GOSPEL REFLECTIONS TODAY: 08/11/24 (Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time)

Gospel Jn 6:41-51 The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven, " and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." Reflection: We have an obligation to go to the house of God to participate in Mass every Sunday. But, more than being an obligation, we need to understand why God has given it and why we need to do it. Jesus said in today's gospel, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever.” If we do not go to Mass and eat His Most Sacred Body and Blood, we do not have eternal life. Christ Himself is the white Host whom we receive. From Him comes eternal life. He gave Himself on the Cross and from the Cross, in the Holy Eucharist for us to eat. Just as how humans sinned by eating, it is by eating the Holy Eucharist that we will be saved. Because of this, we can be restored to our union with God if we take to heart the solemn worship in the Holy Mass. Then, it will bear good fruit in us, especially in our relationships with people because Jesus lives and reigns in us. Because of the presence of Jesus in our heart, soul and body, we are strengthened to resist temptations, evil thoughts and our inner desires. How can we fight alone? Man is by nature weak, and we need God. We need Jesus. We need the Holy Eucharist or participating in the Mass. When we admit that we have many shortcomings and that we need God, He will help us. As He dwells in our heart, body and soul, He will teach us many things so that we can always do what is right for Him and for the salvation of our soul. May we believe in and continuously ponder this. Amen. + May our Loving and Almighty God bless us, and may He defend us against temptations and evil now and forever.
