TODAY'S GOSPEL REFLECTION: "God's Intended Light and Saltiness"
June 13, 2023. Tuesday, Memorial of Saint Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church
Gospel
Mt 5:13-16
Jesus said to his disciples:
"You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand,
where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father."
Reflection
We are here to serve as salt and light to the world. Blessed Tuesday of the Memorial of Saint Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor of the Church. Pure salt is briny and can cause kidney disease when eaten in bulk. We can compare it to a person who makes himself more popular than God. Other people may turn more obsessed with him, while the Lord becomes only a decoration. This is not the kind of saltiness that God wants for us. In today's Gospel, we are reminded that we are to be salt in this world, like salt mixed with food ingredients. Salt dissolves and becomes a flavoring ingredient. When we eat a dish, we no longer see the salt poured on it, we only taste the delicious contribution of the salt to what we are eating. Let us be salty, a servant who dissolves for the Lord, hidden so that God can be seen more by our fellow brethren, and like salt, our love of God should be felt even if others do not know the good things we do.
May we also serve as light when needed. There are times when we need to expose ourselves so that God's message becomes clearer. Let's just do it according to God's intended timing. In the Name of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen+
