TODAY'S GOSPEL REFLECTION: "God's Obedient Followers"

May 27, 2023. Saturday of the Seventh Week of Easter - Mass in the Morning

Gospel

Jn 21:20-25
Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved,
the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper
and had said, "Master, who is the one who will betray you?"
When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?"
Jesus said to him, "What if I want him to remain until I come?
What concern is it of yours?
You follow me."
So the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die.
But Jesus had not told him that he would not die,
just "What if I want him to remain until I come?
What concern is it of yours?"

It is this disciple who testifies to these things
and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true.
There are also many other things that Jesus did,
but if these were to be described individually,
I do not think the whole world would contain the books
that would be written.

Reflection
Look straight towards the path God is leading. Blessed Saturday of the Seventh Week of Easter. Each of us can be compared to a vessel of water. One may be a container for drinking water, the other may be for the water bath, and another may be for washing the dishes, or for watering plants. This is how God made us. God created us and filled us with abilities and talents that cannot be compared to others. And it is up to us how to use the abilities we have. It is also up to God to allow how far we can use these abilities and talents. In the Gospel, we read that Peter was too inquisitive about the fate of John who was called a beloved follower of Jesus. Peter asked this question after learning that he is meant to die in martyrdom. We can remember that John was called 'the beloved' because he was the only apostle who stayed at the foot of the Cross as Christ is dying. We can see that Peter is tempted to compare his destiny to what is meant for John. However, Jesus interrupted Peter's trivial curiosity in knowing the faith of his fellow apostles. Jesus gets back Peter's attention by telling him, "What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow me." Christ wants us to learn to be contented with our path to holiness without comparing it to the path of others. What matters is that we follow Christ. The reality of life tells us that there are things others can do that we can't do and we also have abilities that others may not have. God's creation happened in a way that we have nothing to be proud of once we knew of our uniqueness from others. Remember that we can only reach achieve perfection and true equality in the Kingdom of God the Father.
May we focus our attention on the ability that God has given us. Let's not compare our own situation with others, because a sinner cannot be greater than his fellow sinner. Rather, let's just follow Christ without going being negligent in following paths designed specifically for each of us. In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen+
