SIGN OF CONTRADICTION - 12/29/22 (The Fifth Day in the Octave of Christmas)

Luke 2:33–35
The child’s father and mother were amazed at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Blessed Thursday! The birth of our Lord Jesus Christ was truly a glorious event. He came for our salvation. Despite this, we should also consider the words and prophecy of St. Simeon. The holy child is a sign of contradiction. Jesus was destined for the fall and rise of many people. How could this be possible? For sure, God desires all to be with Him in heaven, but why is it that many still fall? It's because of freedom. Through this freedom, we have the capacity to love God and be united with Him forever. Unfortunately, it also means that some people have used their freedom to stay away from God and to reject His love and mercy for them. Jesus became a sign of contradiction because despite His love, many people still chose to live a sinful lifestyle rather than embrace the gospel of salvation.

But, what happens to us when we see the fall of many people? St. Simeon told the Blessed Virgin Mary that her heart would be pierced by a sword. This pertained to the sufferings she would endure for witnessing the sins of humanity towards our Lord. And yet, this is also true for us. We may also feel that suffering when we see how people are offending Jesus. We may be displeased when many are walking the path of darkness due to sins instead the path of light by following the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church. Let's remember that these are opportunities for our hearts to reveal what's inside of them. What do we feel when we see the imperfections of other people? If we feel some anger, let's reflect on why we become angry and let's beg God for graces for us to remain calm. Bearing the faults of other people with patience and gentleness will help them to do what is right even more than being angry with people because of their mistakes. And, praying for their conversion rather than falling to gossiping about the bad behaviors of people is what is more pleasing to God. This is the sign of our love for Jesus, the light of the world.

Amen +

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, be with us always until the hour of our death. Amen. +

May the Lord + bless us, protect us from all evil and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. +
