Today Jesus praises the Roman centurion who is not one of the Israelites or the chosen people of God. He is a pagan, and he worships the other gods, different than the true God of Israel who is also our God. However, why is this man worthy of Jesus’ praise? It is because regardless of these, he opted to believe in Jesus. Not only that, but his faith in Him exceeds those of the chosen ones. For he believed that if Jesus only speak the words, then his servant shall be healed. This faith is so great that even to this day, we echo the same words every time before receiving the Eucharist. But this time it is us who ask for God’s healing. The centurion understood fully what it means for God to be the Lord of all.
How about us who are the chosen ones of God? What kind of faith do we have in God? It is easy to believe in Him when everything is so smooth and easy. But true faith is tested in the unseen, in the uncertainties, in the challenges and struggles in life. When we can hardly see the light ahead of us, will we still hope in God? This is a question we must ask ourselves. For if He choose us, we must also choose Him. We must choose to believe in Him and have faith in Him against all odds. It is a choice and a grace of God which we must ask of Him. Let us pray and ask God to increase our faith. This faith is an expression of loving God for it means that we know Him for who He is – God who is Supreme overall and none other is like Him. Amen. +
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, be with us always until the hour of our death. Amen. +
God bless us and may He help us always to conform to His will. Amen. +
